Anglo African halts drilling in Congo for rig repairs

(Sharecast News) - Oil and gas developer Anglo African has hit pause on its Tilapia field in the Republic of the Congo after the company insisted that its drilling contractor replace worn parts on its rig.
While the rig had not suffered any mechanical issue, Anglo African demanded the rig company replace two parts, which will be critical in the deeper sections of the well, after they were found to be worn.

As a result of the work, drilling at TLP-103C was temporarily suspended as the group waited for the replacement parts to arrive in Pointe Noire.

Anglo African said that, contrary to speculation, the drill was proceeding well and results had been in accordance with its geological model.

The group stated that the decision to halt operations was taken to avoid the risk of damage to the target horizons should the damaged parts fail and was by no means a result of any breakdown.

Executive chairman David Sefton, said: "The company will not risk damage to the target horizons, and so has insisted on these replacement parts. The delay is temporary and the issue is entirely related to the rig and the drilling contractor."

"There have been no problems encountered with the well. Operations will recommence as soon as possible."

As of 1100 GMT, Anglo African shares had tumbled 7% to 7.38p.
