Sector movers: Supermarket sector in demand

Date: Tuesday 19 Mar 2019

(Sharecast News) - Paper and packaging companies, industrials and the supermarket sector were on the front foot on Tuesday.
Mondi, DS Smith and Smurfit Kappa were all higher.

Mondi said it was looking for a new chair after its joint chairmen announced plans to retire.

Miners were a driving force for the second session in a row, amid stronger copper prices, with Antofagasta leading the way on the back of its strong annual dividend.

Investors were hungry for food retailers, with Sainsbury's and Ocado to the fore.

Sainsbury's advanced after it and Asda promised to invest £1bn in cutting shop prices 10%, improve conditions for small suppliers and sell stores as the supermarkets urged competition authorities to change its mind over their proposed merger.

Ocado reported that sales were barely dented by the huge fire at its Andover depot during the quarter, with 11.2% growth in the first 13 weeks of its new financial year to 3 March. The blaze was said to have been "a setback, but will be only a temporary one".

The oil services sector was the bottom performer as Wood Group fell sharply as it said it swung to a profit in 2018 but that its deleveraging programme this year would be "more gradual than originally anticipated".
