Week ahead: US earnings, China data in focus

(Sharecast News) - The focus over the coming week will be on the first quarter US corporate results season, with banking heavyweights Citigroup and Goldman Sachs due to report to their shareholders on Monday, followed by tech darling Nextflix the next day.
In terms of data, the holiday-shortened week will back-end loaded, with a spate of Chinese data covering first quarter GDP, retail sales and industrial production, all on Wednesday, likely to be the most closely-watched reports.
As ever, any negative surprises as regards progress in US-China trade talks or on Brexit might easily upend market sentiment.
On home turf, readings on employment, consumer prices and retail sales are scheduled for release from Tuesday onwards.
Across the Pond, the most important days will be Wednesday and Thursday, when data on retail sales and the Philly Fed's regional manufacturing index are due out.
Meanwhile, in the euro area, Thursday will bring with it the latest manufacturing sector purchasing managers' index, courtesy of IHS Markit, which typically trigger a large market reaction.
