Sector movers: Miners tail off

By Oliver Haill

Date: Monday 15 Apr 2019

(Sharecast News) - Markets were mixed on Monday with miners in the mire but mobile telecoms marching higher.
Miners were in the red as copper retreated after its strong session on Friday.

Profit taking was cited by CMC Markets analyst David Madden, though data out of China should have boosted support for miners, suggested analysts at Liberum, with further credit growth again in March adding to evidence that China is aggressively stimulating its economy via the banking sector.

"We expect increased corporate borrowing is likely to disproportionately impact manufacturing and consumption over housing construction, which should be incrementally more positive for copper and aluminium demand, as opposed to steel," Liberum said.

Mobile was boosted as Vodafone continued to climb from last week's one-month low, perhaps boosted by a note from Numis that suggested biding in Germany's spectrum auction was "far less" than Italy's auction last year and pointing out that on its forecasts, the FTSE 100 telecoms giant's shares currently trade noticeably cheaper than the sector and with a 9.4% dividend yield.

Telecoms were also higher along with other defensive stocks such as tobacco and life insurers.
