Wizz Air lays claim to 'EU's greenest airline' title

(Sharecast News) - Eastern Europe-focussed low-cost airline Wizz Air introduced a new metric to its monthly statistics on Friday, claiming to be the EU's best performing airline in terms of carbon emissions.
The FTSE 250 company said that in May, it flew a total of 5,656 million revenue passenger kilometres, and a total of 3.47 million passengers.

In terms of carbon dioxide emitted, the airline said total emissions during the month were 319,760 tonnes, with emissions per passenger kilometre reported to be 56.5 grams of carbon dioxide.

That, the airline claimed, showed the airline had the "smallest environmental footprint per passenger" of any European Union Airline.

Wizz Air noted that it operates a "modern fleet" of Airbus A320, A321ceo and A321neo aircraft with an average age of 4,7 years, with its carbon dioxide per passenger kilometre emissions figure having been on a "continuously declining trend" over recent years, dropping by 4.4% in May compared to a year earlier.

It said that, with more than 250 Airbus A321neo aircraft on order, the airline would continue to drive efficiency and improvement in that area with its environmental footprint further decreasing by one third for every passenger over the next decade.

"Wizz Air's ultimate goal is to liberate lives by providing affordable travel, and we pride ourselves on delivering this in the most sustainable way," said Wizz Air chief executive officer József Váradi.

"Being a responsible business and ensuring a sustainable future for the next generation is not a race.

"Today, with the lowest CO2 emissions per passenger/km in the industry, Wizz Air is already the greenest choice of air travel a passenger can make."

Váradi said the airline had set "ambitious goals" for itself to further reduce the impact on the environment by deploying the latest technology and further reducing carbon dioxide emissions per passenger by a third by 2030.

"We have the best tools to achieve this - the A321neo aircraft with Wizz Air's seat configuration of 239 passenger seats and Pratt and Whitney's geared turbofan engines bring the cleanest and most environmentally-friendly technology that currently exists in the world."
