Week ahead: Global PMIs, US Fed in focus

(Sharecast News) - The focus over the coming week will be on preliminary survey data on preliminary euro area and UK manufacturing and services sector surveys covering the month of May.
Across the Channel, Purchasing Managers' indices for the two sectors are expected to show a somewhat slower pace of contraction as lockdowns are gradually lifted.
But the advice from economists at UniCredit is not to be fooled by the expected improvement.
Market participants will also be keeping an eye out for a testimony from Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome Powell, before a Senate committee on Tuesday, followed by a panel discussion, including from Fed vicechair Richard Clarida on Thursday.
Also due out, on Thursday, is the Philly Fed's regional manufacturing index, also for the month of May.
In the background, headlines around negotiations on Capitol Hill on another economic relief package will also need to be monitored.
On home shores, a reading for UK unemployment in March is scheduled for Tuesday and another on consumer prices on Wednesday, followed by monthly public borrowing and retail sales figures at the end of the week.
Across the Channel, investors will be keeping tabs on the ZEW institute's closely-followed economic confidence for the euro area in May, on Tuesday.
On the other side of the world, come Wednesday, policymakers at the People's Bank of China will announce their latest policy decision.
