FTSE 250 movers: Hammerson heads higher; Provident loses ground

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 250 was up 1.2% at 17,479.98 in afternoon trade on Tuesday.
Shopping centre owner Hammerson surged following an upbeat update from Westfield owner Unibail-Rodamco.

Private hospital operator Mediclinic rallied as it reported a widening of its full-year losses due to impairment charges but pointed to improving trends in May.

In the year ended 31 March, the company's reported loss widened to £320m from £151m the year before as it wrote down the value of its equity investment in Spire Healthcare by £10m. Mediclinic also suffered from a goodwill impairment charge of £481m on its Middle East business and £33m on its Swiss Hirslanden business.

On the downside, Provident Financial was under the cosh after Invesco Asset Management placed 30.4m shares of the doorstep lender- its entire stake - via an accelerated bookbuild to institutional investors, with Jefferies the bookrunner.

According to traders, the shares, which represent a 12% stake in the company, were placed at 187p each.
