Week ahead: US jobs data, Sunak in focus

(Sharecast News) - Financial markets focus over the coming week will be on the delicate balance between economic data that in many cases continues to surprise to the upside and progress on containing the Covid-19 pandemic in the world's largest economy, in particular.
With that in mind, investors will be keen to see if the latest weekly US jobless claims figures show that the slight downward trajectory remains in place or if it has stopped improving.
On home shores, Brexit talks between Westminster and Brussels are set to resume over the coming week and on Wednesday the Chancellor is set to deliver his summer economic update.
The calendar of economic events in the UK is otherwise exceptionally light, with the main releases set to be IHS Markit's construction sector PMI and registration figures for new cars, both for the month of June, which are due out on Monday.
Across the Channel, Thursday will bring with it the euro group finance ministers' meeting, with the European Commission's summer forecasts set for release.
They are also expected to decide on who will become the next head of their group.
Readings for industrial production in Germany are expected on Tuesday, followed by similar reports for France and Italy at the end of the week, on Friday.
Further afield, in China, a reading on consumer and factory gate prices in June will also be published on Thursday.
Rate-setters Down Under are due to meet to decide on policy on Tuesday.
