Global experts to discuss challenge of 'fake news' at 2020 Cyber Polygon

(Sharecast News) - Leading experts will meet to discuss the challenges posed by increasingly sophisticated 'fake news' at the 2020 edition of Cyber Polygon.
The initiative, organised by the World Economic Forum's Centre for Cybersecurity and Sberbank will be held online, on Wednesday, with the support of INTERPOL.
It will be hosted by veteran journalists Vladimir Pozner and ex-BBC presenter Nick Gowing, from 1100 BST.
They will focus on the damage wrought by disinformation on the worldwide web on the well-being of businesses and entire nations, how the phenomenon is likely to evolve and what needs to be done to address it.
Special laws are being adopted by countries including the Russian Federation and many of the largest online platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google have joined together to tackle the problem.
By some estimates, fake news cost the world economy $78bn in 2019 and in countries like Russia such misleading reports jumped by a third in 2018.
New technologies known as 'deepfake', whereby falsified audio or video footage, are expected to make the situation even worse, with market researcher Forrester estimating losses from these types of attacks alone could reach $250m this year.
Aside from the online videostream, this year's edition of Cyber Polygon will include a training exercise for technical specialists from major international corporations.
The aim will be to develop a variety of skills, including mitigation of cyberattacks, incident investigation, checking the IT perimeter for vulnerabilities, as well as collecting information about the attacks to be passed on to law enforcement agencies.
