Retail footfall declines as new tiered restrictions have immediate impact

(Sharecast News) - Downing Street's new Covid-19 tiered restrictions have had an immediate impact on British retailers as footfall continued to fall in the week ended 17 October.
Footfall across all retail destinations throughout the UK declined by 3.1% last week, according to data from Springboard, while annual footfall fell 32.3% - a further widening from the 30.9% drop recorded in the previous week.

Larger cities continued to be hit hardest by the increased restrictions, with footfall in regional cities declining by 5.7%, while market towns saw a 2.1% decline and coastal towns recorded a 1.2% drop.

Footfall in Central London declined by 2.3%, less than half that in regional cities around the UK, however, Springboard stated much of that was due to the fact that the capital had previously recorded far greater drops in footfall than elsewhere.

The data also showed that the 2200 BST closure of hospitality meant that the decline in high street footfall after 1800 BST across the UK of 4.5% was nearly double that over the daytime trading period.

However, Springboard did highlight that the results varied significantly between nations, with post-1800 BST high street footfall in Northern Ireland and Scotland declining by 9.8% and 20.4%, respectively and 2.3% across English regions. In Wales, on the other hand, footfall actually rose by 11.3%.
