Week ahead: ECB, US tech giants' earnings in focus

(Sharecast News) - The next-to-last week before the US Presidential elections will be heavily back-end loaded, with interest rate decisions from the European Central Bank and Bank of Japan both due out on Thursday, followed by quarterly earnings updates from Amazon, Apple and Facebook all due out after the close of trading that same day.

Regarding the ECB, the latest euro area services sector Purchasing Managers' Index, referencing October, came in below forecasts, setting off talk of a double-dip recession, thus heightening speculation that the monetary authority might continue laying the groundwork for further stimulus in the near-term.
"In the absence of an imminent fiscal response from the EU due to a lack of consensus, the ECB remains the only game in town, however its response is being constrained by splits on the governing council, with a number of members pushing back against further stimulus in the short term," said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.
"Once again, the ECB will come under pressure to articulate a new response to what is likely to be further economic weakness in Q4."
It was also set to be a heavy week in terms of UK corporate announcements, with BP and HSBC both due out with trading statement on Tuesday, followed by Lloyds and Natwest on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
