Friday preview: US retail sales, Burberry in focus

(Sharecast News) - The main risk events at the end of the week will be in the US where reports on retail sales and consumer confidence will be released.

At 1330 BST, the Department of Commerce is expected to report a 0.5% month-on-month fall in retail sales volumes, although excluding automobiles they are seen bouncing back versus May by 0.5%.

Also due out is a preliminary reading on the University of Michigan's consumer confidence index for July which is expected to have edged up from 85.5 at the end of June to 87.0 in early July.

In the euro area meanwhile, at 1000 BST Eurostat will publish a reading on consumer prices for the month of June.

Due out at the same time is a report on euro area foreign trade in May.

Further afield, overnight rate-setters in Tokyo are set to meet to decide on monetary policy.

When luxury fashion giant Burberry publishes its first quarter trading update, investors are likely to be focusing on the firm's sales in China, the key driver of the previous year's performance.

They will also be looking to see if the company's guidance that increased investment and a normalisation of expenses would drag on profits is being borne out.

Yet the key question on everyone's mind will be who will replace Marco Gobbetti as chief executive officer at the end of 2021, when he is due to step down.
