US open: Dow Jones extends winning streak following retail sales report

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street stocks were in the green early on Friday following the publication of some better-than-expected retail sales figures.
As of 1520 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.00% at 35,260.18, while the S&P 500 was 0.66% firmer at 4,467.43 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.27% stronger at 14,863.36.
The Dow opened 347.62 points higher on Friday, extending gains recorded in the previous session on the back of solid bank earnings and an upside surprise in this week's jobless claims report.
With things quiet on the earnings front, Friday's primary focus was last month's retail sales numbers, which revealed Americans unexpectedly resumed splashing out on goods and services last month. According to the Department of Commerce, in seasonally adjusted terms, US retail sales volumes jumped at a month-on-month pace of 0.7% to reach $625.45bn - far better than the 0.3% fall that the economists were anticipating.
Elsewhere on the macro front, a preliminary reading of the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index came in at 71.4, short of estimates for a print of 73.1 and down from September's 72.8 reading.
Still to come, the Federal Government's September budget statement will follow at 1900 BST.
In the corporate space, Goldman Sachs beat third-quarter estimates by a mile with stronger-than-expected performances in nearly all of its main segments of activity. For the three months ending in September, the banking heavyweight posted a 20.8% jump in its total revenues to reach $13.61bn for a 39.8% jump in earnings per share to reach $14.93.
