Week ahead: US CPI, Fedspeak in focus

(Sharecast News) - Financial markets' focus over the coming week is likely to be on the US consumer price data that is expected to show inflation running above 7.0% for the first time since 1982.
Consensus is for an acceleration in the annual rate of CPI gains from 6.8% for December to 7.1% in January.

Those figure may cement expectations for a first interest rate hike by the Fed at its 16 March policy meeting.

Linked to the above, a slew of Fed speakers are also lined up for throughout the week, including Fed chairman, Jerome Powell, on Tuesday.

Investors will also be keeping an eye out for the start of the US fourth quarter earnings season, on Friday, with JP Morgan and Citigroup both due to report.

Speeches by European Central Bank boss, Christine Lagarde, and her number two, Luis de Guindos, will also be closely watched for any policy-relevant remarks.

On home shore, the key day will be Friday, when the Office for National Statistics is due to release activity indicators for November.

Economists at Barclays Research expect the year-on-year rate of growth in UK GDP to have picked up from 4.6% in October to 7.8%.

Further afield, in the People's Republic of China, readings for consumer and producer prices in December are due out on Wednesday.

In the background, markets will also be keep an exceedingly close eye on the outcome of US-Russia talks in Genevaw, which will be followed by others between NATO and the OSCE and Russia later in the week.
