(Sharecast News) - Retail sales across the eurozone partially rebounded in August after their steepest drop in two years the previous month, according to data out on Monday from Eurostat.
The volume of retail trade increased by just 0.1% during the month, matching economists' projections following a revised 0.4% decline in July.
Sales of food, drinks and tobacco were 0.3% higher over August, while automotive fuel sales were up 0.4%, slightly offset by a 0.1% fall in non-food product sales.
Among member states, the highest monthly growth rates in sales were recorded in Lithuania (+1.7%), Cyprus and Malta (both +1.5%), while the biggest declines were seen in Luxembourg and Portugal (both -0.7%).
Compared with August 2024, retail sales across the single-currency region were up 1.0%, slowing from the 2.1% and 3.5% annual gains seen in July and June, respectively.
