Orsted boosts coffers with £7bn rights issue

(Sharecast News) - Denmark's Orsted has raised nearly £7bn in a heavily discounted rights issue, as it looks to shore up its finances amid Donald Trump's vocal opposition to wind power.
In a statement released late on Monday, the offshore wind developer said it had raised Danish krone 59.56bn (£6.93bn) through the offer.

The new shares were offered at DKK66.6 each, well below Monday's market price of DKK122.35.

Rasmus Errboe, chief executive, said: "I am very pleased with the strong support we've received for our rights issue from small and large investors in Denmark and aboard, including a majority shareholder, the Danish state.

"The rights issue strengthens Orsted's financial foundation, allowing us to focus on delivering our six offshore wind farms under construction, continue to handle the regulatory uncertainty in the US and strengthen our position as a market leader in offshore wind."

Initially an oil producer, Orsted has transformed itself into a major offshore wind developer. However, the once booming sector has been rocked by a number of headwinds in recent years, with projects hit by supply chain issues, inflation and higher rates.

Trump is also bitterly opposed to wind power, with both of Orsted's US schemes - Sunrise Wind and Revolution Wind - affected as a result.

Errboe said: "We'll continue to work hard on executing our strategy and delivering results.

"It will be a long, tough haul, and we have a lot of work ahead of us in the coming years to ensure progress on our projects under construction [and] improve our competitiveness."

The offering is slated to complete on Thursday.

The Danish state owns 50.1% of Orsted.
