US close: Stocks slip as shutdown drags into second week

(Sharecast News) - Major indices closed lower on Tuesday as the government shutdown stretched into its seventh day.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.20% at 46,602.98, while the S&P 500 shed 0.38% to 6,714.59, and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.67% lower at 22,788.36.

The Dow closed 91.99 points lower on Tuesday, extending losses recorded in the previous session.

Stocks traded lower as the Federal Government shutdown entered its second week, as efforts to end the shutdown stalled again after the Senate failed for a fifth time to pass a House-backed funding bill that would have kept operations running through 21 November. The vote fell short of the 60-vote threshold required to advance the legislation, with senators largely split along party lines. At least eight Democrats would need to join Republicans in order to move the bill forward.

Donald Trump reiterated his criticism of Democrats, stating he was "happy to work with the Democrats on their Failed Healthcare Policies, or anything else, but first they must allow our Government to re-open". Earlier in the day, Trump had suggested negotiations were ongoing and showing progress, though Democrats have continued to push for any short-term funding deal to include an extension of enhanced Obamacare tax credits.

"We have a negotiation going on right now with the Democrats that could lead to very good things," said Trump. "And I'm talking about good things with regard to healthcare."

However, that was later denied by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said : "THIS ISN'T TRUE", adding that "if Republicans are finally ready to sit down and get something done on health care for American families, Democrats will be there - ready to make it happen".

The US government shutdown has delayed key economic data releases and has now begun to raise concerns over broader disruption, with unpaid federal workers now including TSA staff and air traffic controllers, with active duty military personnel also at risk of missing pay if the impasse continues into next week. Trump said back pay for furloughed workers "depends on who we're talking about".

In the corporate space, tech stocks fell on Tuesday, led by Oracle, after reports suggested the software group was generating significantly lower margins on its cloud business than analysts had forecast. The Information also claimed Oracle was losing money on some Nvidia chip rental deals. Shares dropped more than 2%, with the Nasdaq hitting session lows on the news.

Electric carmaker Tesla shed more than 4% after unveiling cheaper variants of its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles. The Model Y standard version was priced below $40,000, while the Model 3 starts at around $37,000, according to the company's website.
