Week ahead: UK employment, US government shutdown and bank earnings in focus

(Sharecast News) - Investor focus over the coming week will be on the latest employment and gross domestic product data due out in the UK.
For City analyst Michael Hewson, the most recent wage data in the UK had shown that " expectations of a rapid slowing are still wide of the mark".
That, in turn, meant that rate cuts from the Bank of England in the near term were still less likely than the government might want, he explained.
"What we appear to be seeing is a slow deterioration in the labour market rather than a full crisis in confidence."
In the US meanwhile, there are as of yet scant signs that lawmakers on Capitol Hill are any closer to a resolution of the federal government shutdown.
Democrats continue to push for the White House to walk back changes to healthcare policies.
For his part, Trump is on record saying: "We're going to be cutting some very popular Democrat programs that aren't popular with Republicans, frankly.
"They wanted to do this, so we'll give them a little taste of their own medicine."
As an aside, the release of the US CPI report for September, which was expected on Wednesday, has been rescheduled for release on 24 October, regardless of the federal government shutdown. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, no other data reports would be rescheduled.
Investors will also be keeping a close eye on the ongoing US-China trade tensions.
Monday will bring with it the latest monthly foreign trade figures from China.
In parallel, the International Monetary Fund's autumn meetings will run between Monday and Saturday.
US financial markets will remain closed on Monday in observance of the Columbus Day holiday.
On the corporate side of things, come Tuesday heavyweight lenders JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup will kick off the third quarter reporting season in the US.
Bank of America and Morgan Stanley will follow on Wednesday.
"There's always a little nervousness when it comes to bank share prices as investors look for clues with respect to consumer spending, as well as loan demand at a time when US consumers are struggling with higher prices and possible spillover effects from tariffs," Hewson said.
"Recent earnings numbers have indicated there's been little evidence that US consumers are struggling significantly."
For his part, Interactive Investors's Head of Markets, Richard Hunter, chipped in saying: "overarching themes will include whether the strength of the second quarter in deal making and investment banking fees has continued, how trading income has fared given market volatility and the health of the consumer in terms of borrowing, where any signs of rising bad loans would provide a red flag on deteriorating economic conditions."
