Week ahead: UK bank earnings in focus

(Sharecast News) - UK bank earnings will be in focus next week, with Barclays, Lloyds and NatWest all slated to report third-quarter numbers.
Barclays is set to report earnings on Wednesday, while Lloyds and NatWest will report on Thursday and Friday, respectively. HSBC is not due release its Q3 numbers until 28 October.
Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, noted that it's been a busy few weeks for Lloyds and said next week's results are expected to see £800m added to its car finance provision, taking the total close to £2bn.
"The move follows the Financial Conduct Authority's consultation on compensation, with Lloyds pushing back on parts of the proposal. While the extra cost isn't ideal, £2 billion as a total cost is better than many had feared just a few months ago and signals that the bank is getting closer to drawing a line under the issue," he said.
"Sentiment toward UK banks has been strong this year, and Lloyds is expected to keep its streak of net interest income growth intact. Credit quality will be a key watchpoint, with provisions for bad loans expected to land at around £314 million. Borrowers have remained resilient so far, so another better-than-expected outcome wouldn't be surprising."
Shares in London-listed banks fell heavily on Friday amid concerns about US regional banks, after Zions Bancorp and Western Alliance said on Thursday that they had been victims of fraud on loans to funds that invest in distressed commercial mortgages.
Zions Bancorp said it would take a $50m charge-off related to a loan issued by its California Bank & Trust division, while Western Alliance said it had begun legal proceedings over a bad loan.
Investors will also be eyeing a third-quarter trading statement from Unilever on Thursday.
UBS expects the consumer goods giant to achieve a 4.6% increase in underlying sales growth (USG), up from 3.8% in the second quarter.
Aarin Chiekrie, equity analyst at HL, said markets are forecasting underlying sales growth of 3.7% to €14.8bn in next week's third-quarter update, with the uplift largely driven by recent price increases.
He also said investors will be keen to get updates on the ice cream business, which has been operating as a standalone entity since the start of the third quarter.
"Its spin-off into a separately listed company is pencilled in for mid-November, but with Unilever set to retain a stake of up to 20%, investors are eager to hear that the separation process hasn't brought about too much disruption," he said.
On the macro front, UK public sector borrowing figures for September are due on Tuesday, while retail sales data for the same month will be among the highlights on Friday.
Across the Pond, the US consumer price index for September is scheduled for release on Friday.
