China to suspend some retaliatory tariffs on US imports

(Sharecast News) - China has suspended retaliatory tariffs on a range of US imports, it was announced on Wednesday, following ground-breaking talks between the two countries.

China's Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council confirmed it would remove duties of up to 15% on certain US agricultural goods from 10 November.

It will also suspend for a year the 24% additional tariffs imposed on US goods in April, in response to Donald Trump's so-called Liberation Day duties.

However, 10% levies will remain in place, while imports of US soybeans will also still face a 13% tariff.

Trump and Chinese premier Xi Jinping met last month in South Korea, the first face-to-face meeting since 2019.

Shortly afterwards, the White House said it had agreed to trim its tariffs in exchange for Beijing crackling down on the illegal fentanyl trade.

Beijing, however, did not publish its response until this week.

The Commission said that the suspension of "certain additional tariffs" between the US and China would "help promote the sound, stable and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations", according to local media.
