Novartis cutting up to 550 jobs in northern Switzerland

(Sharecast News) - Novartis said on Tuesday it will cut up to 550 jobs at its Stein site in northern Switzerland by the end of 2027, as the company prepared to end production of tablets, capsules and the packaging of sterile medicines at the facility.
The group said the changes, which remain subject to a statutory information and consultation process, reflected a broader shift towards greater automation and updated manufacturing technologies needed to maintain competitiveness in Switzerland.

It stressed the restructuring was not linked to its plans to expand in the United States, despite recent pressure on Swiss firms to invest there following US president Donald Trump's 39% tariffs on Switzerland.

Those duties are set to fall to 15% under a bilateral agreement announced this month, though the lower rate had not yet taken effect.

Steffen Lang, president of operations at Novartis, said the group "continues to invest in Switzerland," with domestic sites still supplying more than 120 countries.

Alongside the job cuts, Novartis said it would invest around $100m across its Swiss operations.

That would include $80m to expand siRNA production at its Schweizerhalle site near Basel, where the company expected to create about 80 new jobs by the end of 2028.

A further $26m would be invested in sterile dosage form production at Stein.

The group said affected employees would receive support through measures including a job centre, early retirement options and an extended social plan running until 2028.

At 1339 CET (1239 GMT), shares in Novartis were up 1.03% at CHF 104.06.
