EU car registrations hit four-month high as BEV sales surge

(Sharecast News) - New car registrations across the European Union rose to a four-month high in October, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), as strong demand for electric cars continued to make up for falling sales of petrol and diesel models.
Some 916,609 cars were delivered last month, up 5.8% over last year and the highest number since June, following a 10.0% surge in September.

When Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and the UK are included, sales totalled 1.092m, up 4.9% on October 2024.

Hybrid electric vehicles continued to be the most popular choice for drivers across the EU, representing 34.5% of all cars sold during the month, up from 33.4% the year before, with sales numbers up 9.4% at 316,068.

Battery electric vehicles made up 18.9% of all EU new car sales, up from 14.4% 12 months earlier, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles took a 10.5% share, up from 7.8% previously.

Despite the strong increase, the ACEA pointed out that overall car sales volumes remain "far below" levels before the pandemic.

"The battery-electric car market share reached 16.4% YTD, yet it is still below the pace needed at this stage of the transition," the ACEA said.

Meanwhile, sales of petrol cars slumped 14.3% year-on-year to 227,416, accounting for just 24.8% of the market, down from 30.6% last October. Diesel sales also dropped 21.9% to 73,830, with its share of new registrations dropping to 8.1% from 10.9%.
