The defence giant's recruitment drive eclipses its previous record of 568 apprentice recruits in 2014.

Opportunities are spread across the country, including sites in Dorset, Leeds, Guildford and Tyne and Wear.

About 470 will have engineering–related roles across 14 aerospace, security and defence sites, including the submarine design and manufacturing site in Barrowin–Furness in Cumbria to work on next generation models.

Other opportunities include design and IT roles and cyber security.

The recruitment drive comes just two months after BAE announced it was culling 440 management jobs.
