As the parent holding company for a group of insurance and non-insurance companies, UnumProvident, is the largest provider of group and individual disability income protection insurance in North America. The Tennessee-based group insures more than 25m people and, in 2003, paid $5.7bn in total benefits to customers. It operates, primarily, throughout North America, the United Kingdom and Japan, employing more than 13,000 people worldwide.
