Government bonds fared poorly in May. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury nosed above 4% late in the month. Yields on UK and European government bonds also rose. The credit market was boosted by successful rights issues from financial institutions. This, and oil price rises which fuelled inflationary concerns, led to sharp rises in government bond yields.
