The FTSE All-Share Index rose by 5% in August, buoyed by retreating commodity prices and takeover speculation in the banking sector, despite ongoing concerns over the weakening domestic economy and inflation.Consumer and producer prices accelerated in July. But the Bank of England left interest rates unchanged, as growth continued to deteriorate. Second-quarter GDP growth was flat, compared with the first quarter, hurt by weakness in household consumption and business investment.There were no strategic changes to the portfolio during the month.
The Bank of England cut its 2009 growth forecast and warned of further contraction over the next few quarters.
