FTSE 100 movers: Centrica climbs, Prudential slides

By Duncan Ferris

Date: Monday 21 Oct 2019

LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was 0.31% higher at 7,173.00 in afternoon trade on Monday, with Centrica leading the index upward.
Down at the other end of the index, Prudential was the top faller after it completed the demerger of M&G PLC, which had been announced back in March 2018.

CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson said: "With Prudential now focussing on its US and Asia business, some of the early weakness may well be as a result of concerns about the unrest in Hong Kong acting as a drag on that key geography, while the absence of the UK business has probably resulted in some weakness as well."

Medical equipment manufacturer Smith & Nephew was also in the red after confirming that its chief executive officer, Namal Nawana, will step down "to pursue other opportunities outside of the UK".

Just Eat fell as it reported third quarter losses from its Latin American operations, though overall revenue grew by 25% to £248m and the online food delivery service reaffirmed its full-year guidance.

AJ Bell analyst Russ Mould said: "Ultimately today's numbers show growth has slowed since the first half in the third quarter of the year. The market has been a bit grumpy with Just Eat since the summer when the group agreed its merger with Dutch firm Takeaway.com - with the 15% premium to the company's previous close seen as a very miserly portion."

Finally, Reckitt Benckiser dropped after reporting that its finance chief Adrian Hennah will retire from his role next year to be replaced by Jeff Carr, current chief financial officer at Dutch supermarket chain Ahold Delhaize NV.
