LONDON (ShareCast) - Some 500 people could lose their jobs as water and sewerage company Severn Trent has decided to merge its divisions.
Currently the water firm employs 6,000 people but these roles will double up in the merger, resulting in "a potential impact of around 500 fewer management/support roles within our UK business", Severn Trent revealed in a statement.
However, the firm also emphasised that they will be creating 100 new "front-line roles as customer support remains [the] number one priority".
There has been no announcement as yet on which locations will face the brunt of the cuts.
Severn Trent is a Coventry-based company that distributes water to almost eight million people in the Midlands and across Wales.
"We're not yet at the point where we know where things are going to go but [the company is] working through things as we speak," a spokeswoman told Digital Look.
She added: "We will work together to minimise the need for compulsory redundancies. We have already had recruitment controls in place since July and are reducing the number of contractors and temporary resources."
"We will also seek volunteers for redundancy in areas where we need to lose roles. We are hopeful that these measures will keep any need for compulsory redundancies to an absolute minimum."
