LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - The spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in Spain is progressing more slowly than authorities had feared, the head of the country's emergency services said.
In remarks made on Thursday on state broadcaster TVE 1, Fernando Simon, the director of Spain's Emergency and Alerts centre, broke down the latest figures on new virus infections into those which had been detected through PCR testing and those found via antibody tests.
Of the 4,635 in new infections registered over the 24 hours until Thursday morning, which had marked a slight pick up in the daily rate of increase to 2.2%, 3,052 patients had been diagnosed through PCR and the remaining 1,656 via antibody tests.
"Having increased the number of PCRs, of antibody testing and the frequency of sweeps of various population groups, we knew that the number of infections detected would rise relative to before - but the increase has been lower than what we were expecting, despite the "very significant" increase in testing.
"That indicates that the epidemic is progressing even better than we had thought. Nonetheless, the data needs to be interpreted with greater care."
