LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - Tristel welcomed updated US guidelines on Monday that, for the first time, recognised chlorine dioxide as an accepted option for high-level disinfection of ultrasound probes - a move the company said strengthened the market position of its Tristel ULT product in the United States.
The AIM-traded firm said the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine had expanded its guidance on ultrasound probe handling and reprocessing in healthcare settings to include chlorine dioxide for high-level disinfection.
It said its chlorine dioxide-based foam, branded as Tristel ULT in the US, is manufactured and distributed by Parker Laboratories under an exclusive agreement and is the only FDA-cleared chlorine dioxide foam disinfectant for ultrasound probes available in the country.
Chief executive Matt Sassone said the decision marked a significant step for the company, coming after chlorine dioxide foam was added last year to the American national standard on chemical sterilisation and high-level disinfection.
"We are delighted to see AIUM's decision to include chlorine dioxide as an approved method for high-level disinfection for ultrasound instruments," he said.
"Together with the inclusion last year of chlorine dioxide foam in the American national standard on chemical sterilisation and high-level disinfection - which acknowledges this modality as a valid HLD option - this marks a significant milestone for the US market."
Sassone added that Tristel ULT had been approved in more than 35 countries since 2008, adding that the updated guidance "underscores the importance of our technology in highly sterilised care environments where consistency and compliance are of critical importance."
He said the company believes "the conditions are well-aligned for accelerated adoption of Tristel ULT in the US ultrasound market - supporting frontline clinicians, infection-prevention teams and hospital administrators alike."
At 1130 GMT, shares in Tristel were up 1.9% at 361.75p.
