LONDON (ShareCast) - (ShareCast News) - CVS Health announced on Thursday that it would be introducing a new generic version of the Epipen, the allergic reaction treatment which has seen prices skyrocket to $600 this year.
US president-elect Donald Trump launched an attack on big pharmaceutical firms during his first major press conference since his election victory in November on Wednesday, echoing the concerns of many that such firms are taking advantage of customers.
CVS, the largest chain of pharmacies throughout the United States, said it would sell a two-pack of the emergency injection for $109.99, almost one-third of the initial price listed by the original distributors, Mylan.
In 2016, Mylan faced a congressional hearing in which its CEO Heather Bresch admitted "full responsibility" for the massive price hikes related to the drug.
Trump took aim at pharma companies on Wednesday at Trump Tower, and their quest for profits without consideration for those in need of their products.
"They're getting away with murder," the president-elect said. His comments led to a large sell-off of pharmaceuticals, which wiped as much as $25bn from the market capitalisation of those in the industry.
Shares in Pfizer, one of the industry's largest firms, ended 2% lower and shaved $2bn from the company.
