Chipotle shares drop on reports of Los Angeles county investigation into potential outbreak

Date: Thursday 21 Dec 2017

LONDON (ShareCast) - (ShareCast News) - Shares in US fast food restaurant Chipotle Mexican Grill fell on Wednesday when reports surfaced that a number of customers had reported symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and nausea on iwaspoisoned.com after eating at one of its Los Angeles locations.
The Los Angeles Health Department's Acute Communicable Disease Control unit has confirmed that it was "aware of reports of illness" at the west LA restaurant and was said to be investigating the reports.

"Public Health routinely monitors for and investigates reports of foodborne illness and communicable diseases in response to health concerns," the division said.

The website on which reports initially surfaced, iwaspoisoned.com, was the same place that reports concerning a Chipotle in Sterling, Virginia began in July.

The location was temporarily closed before Loudoun County health officials cited the branch as the source of 135 norovirus illnesses.

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold said: "We take any report of illness very seriously.

"We are aware of three reports (two of which appear to be the same) on a user-generated reporting site, but there is no clinical validation associated with those reports."

"My whole family and I ate at Chipotle two days before we started experiencing stomach pains and nausea," one customer wrote. "It was constant vomiting every two hours and weakness. We all had burrito bowls with meat, beans, rice, and guac. The symptoms lasted for two days now. We're starting to feel better, but it was a very uncomfortable experience and we won't be going to Chipotle anymore after this."

The Mexican themed eatery had previously dealt with a massive outbreak of e.coli in 2015 that affected more than 50 people across 14 states.

Shares fell as much as 4.6% following the reports, but as of 1415 GMT on Thursday, had recovered to trade up 0.61% in pre-market trade to $298.67.
