LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - Huawei claimed on Wednesday that Qualcomm had applied for a US government license to sell its chips to the Chinese tech giant.
The company was restricted from procuring chips for its smartphones from US companies or firms that use US equipment after the Trump administration accused it of potentially spying for Beijing.
After the blacklist came into force last year, all companies that wish to do business with Huawei need to have Washington's permission to do so.
In May, Washington amended a rule to require foreign manufacturers using US chip making equipment to obtain a license before being able to sell semiconductors to Huawei.
As a result, Huawei now designs its own smartphone chips, called Kirin, through its HiSilicon subsidiary.
"The U.S. has been continuously attacking us ... and that has posed great challenges to our production and our operation," Guo Ping, rotating chairman at Huawei, said on Wednesday to reporters in Shanghai. "We got the last batch of chipsets in middle of September, we are still evaluating more details," Guo said.
"Qualcomm has always been a very important partner of Huawei. Over the past decade and more, Huawei has been procuring chipsets from Qualcomm. I've noticed Qualcomm has applied for a license to export products to Huawei from the U.S. government and if they get the license we are willing to continue to procure from them and use their chipsets in our smartphones."
Intel has already received licences to supply certain products to Huawei, while China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, which uses US-origin machinery to produce chips for Huawei, has applied for a licence.
