LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - European supermarkets are following in Asian steps and are suffering severe depletion of goods as stockpiling over coronavirus fears hits the continent.
Supermarkets in Germany and the Netherlands are facing higher demand for toilet paper and hygiene products as well as other groceries.
French authorities are considering capping the price on hand sanitizer gel as retailers are reportedly taking advantage of the the high demand.
The recent spread of coronavirus cases across Europe has fueled the urge to hoard, as health officials advise populations to use sanitizer and self isolate if there is suspicion of infection.
At a DM drugstore in Berlin on Monday, shoppers had cleared the shelves of toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, plastic gloves, flour, canned goods, muesli and oat milk.
Hand sanitizer was among the hardest-to-find products at stores from London to Paris and Amsterdam.
The German Health Ministry has even published a food survival list on its website.
According to Bloomberg, if concerns over the disease intensify there is a danger that consumer behavior could turn nastier.
