Danone investigates claims baby milk makes some infants ill

LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - French firm Danone is investigating claims that its Aptamil baby milk formula has made some infants ill after recently changing its formula.
The company changed the recipe of the baby milk formula three months ago and since then hundreds of parents have complained that their babies are feeling sick after taking it.

Parents told the BBC that babies experienced upset stomachs after using the newest version of Aptamil First Infant Milk powder which apparently does not dissolve correctly in the bottles and left clumps of residue.

"It smelled different, like gone-off milk that had been left out for a day", one mother told the BBC.

Danone admitted it had carried out extensive tests and said the feedback received was a serious matter. It set up a helpline for parents to call for advice and to tell their experience.

The firm is also receiving complaints for reducing the size of the revised products from 900g to 800g but keeping the price the same.

THE DEFENDER OF FORMULA MAKERS

These complaints come after a resolution to encourage breastfeeding was opposed by the US embracing the interest of formula makers despite it being scientifically proven that breast milk is healthiest for children.

American officials looked to remove from the resolution the sentence that called on governments to "protect, promote and support breast-feeding" and another passage that called on policymakers to restrict the promotion of food products that many experts say could have negative effects on babies.

The US even turned on Ecuador and said that if it did not withdraw its support for the measure it could face punitive trade moves and even the potential loss of military aid against gang violence in the South American country.

Patti Rundall, the policy director of the British advocacy group Baby Milk Action said according to the Guardian: "What happened was tantamount to blackmail, with the U.S. holding the world hostage and trying to overturn nearly 40 years of consensus on the best way to protect infant and young child health."
