LONDON (ShareCast) - (Sharecast News) - Cruise operator Carnival said on Tuesday that it had detected a ransomware incident in which the data of its guests and employees was accessed.
The ransomware attack, which was detected on 15 August, accessed and encrypted a portion of one brand's information technology systems. The unauthorised access also included the download of some of Carnival's data files.

"Promptly upon its detection of the security event, the company launched an investigation and notified law enforcement, and engaged legal counsel and other incident response professionals," it said.

"While the investigation of the incident is ongoing, the company has implemented a series of containment and remediation measures to address this situation and reinforce the security of its information technology systems."

Carnival, which owns the P&O and Cunard cruise lines among others, said it was working with "industry-leading" cybersecurity firms to respond to the threat.

The incident is not expected to have a material impact on the business, its operations or financial results. However, the security breach may result in potential claims from guests, employees, shareholders, or regulatory agencies, Carnival said.
