LONDON (ShareCast) - The online broadcasting rights for Seinfeld, the acclaimed 1990s sitcom 'about nothing', have been snapped up for a reported $180m from owner Sony.
Online streaming provider Hulu, which is based in the US and has tried but failed to expand into the UK, was reported to have agreed to pay $1m per show, according to Variety magazine, defeating Netflix, Amazon and Yahoo in a bid battle.
Rival publisher Deadline reported the deal was closer $130, or $0.7m for each of the 180 22-minute episodes.
Seinfeld, which was created by stand-up comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, remains one of the most successful television shows of all-time, being the first television series to command a $1m-a-minute cost for advertising slots.
Seinfeld and David allegedly turned down a $100m offer to continue the show for a tenth season.
Some 76.3m viewers tuned in to watch the series finale when it aired in May 1998.
