September was a brutal month for financial markets as the credit crunch worsened into a fully-fledged financial crisis. As various leveraged market participants tried to unwind their positions at any price, market moves became violent, erratic and illogical. Fundamentals took a back seat as fear came to the fore: volatility, as measured by the VIX index, rose as high as 78, a level only surpassed in the history of the index on Black Monday in October 1987.The MSCI World equity index fell 11.9% in the month, the Rogers Agricultural Commodity Index fell 14.8% and the fund fell 26.5%, in line with its peers.
