To give an income, and the potential for long-term capital growth, by investing mainly in shares and fixed interest securities (including corporate bonds) in the UK, but may include Europe.
The corporate bond market remains volatile, with performance lagging behind similarly-dated government bonds. Corporate bonds are still affected by concerns relating to US subprime mortgages and market liquidity. The yield spread (the premium payable by corporate bond issuers to reflect higher risk) has begun to widen; by late June spreads were at their widest since March.
