LONDON (ShareCast) - Luke Jensen, the Group Development Director of Sainsbury, purchased 5,944 shares for him and his wife.

The transaction was split into 2,971 shares for himself, bought at 3,974p a time, and 2,973 shares for his wife, bought at 3,972p.

Jensen, who joined Sainsbury and the operating board in June 2008 as Director of Strategy, now has a total holding of 360,461 shares.

The transaction was made on Tuesday, one day after the company's Chief Financial Officer, John Rogers, revealed that he believes it is still too early to draw a line under the economic downturn.

Speaking at the Reuters Global Consumer and Retail Summit, Rogers said: "Whilst there are some economic signs that the economy is improving, you're not yet seeing that evidenced in consumer behaviour.

"The blip over the summer brought about by the very good weather is just that - it's a bit of a blip."

That compared to George Osborne, who said that the UK economy has "turned a corner", with "tentative signs of a balanced, broad based and sustainable recovery", although he did warn recovery was still the early stages.
