LONDON (ShareCast) - Toyota is set to recall 6.4m vehicles globally to replace faults affecting various parts, including steering and seats.

The recall includes 3.5m vehicles to replace a spiral cable attached to the driver's side airbag.

Other problems have been identified in steering columns, seat rails, windscreen wipers and engine starters.

The world's biggest carmaker said it was not aware the issues had caused vehicle crashes, injuries or fatalities, but has received two reports on fires in connection with the engine starter problem.

Faults were found in 27 different models including the RAV4 SUV, Yaris, Pontiac Vibe and the Subaru Trezia.

The firm did not disclose the cost of the recall. It was also unclear on whether the faults stemmed from Toyota's suppliers or its manufacturing process.

"We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience and concern brought by this recall announcement," Toyota said in a statement.

In February, the company recalled 1.9m of its Prius hybrid cars due to a software fault that might cause the vehicle to slow down suddenly.

Late last year it issued separate recalls of more than 2.2m vehicles.

Over the past two-and-a-half years, the company has recalled more than 25m vehicles.

Shares in Toyota Motor Corp. dropped 3.3% to 5,440p in London at 15:00.
