Morrison, which last week announced a 9.2% year-on-year increase in LFL sales in the 13 weeks to 3 May.

Bank of America chief executive Ken Lewis admitted that pressure from federal regulators convinced him to proceed with the takeover of Merrill Lynch last year. Industrial production rose for the first time in 14 months in April, while an increase in activity at car plants helped manufacturing output improve for the second month in a row. Output jumped 0.3% from the month before, according to the Office for National Statistics, the first rise since February 2008 and better than the 0.1% fall predicted by analysts.
