Sunday Telegraph
The announcement of Arun Sarin's departure as Vodafone boss came alongside a 10% jump in underlying earnings to £13.2bn - higher than the City had forecast - and an 11% increase in the dividend.
Mr Sarin has increased Vodafone's customer base from 120m five years ago to 260m, while it is now making a sustained push into mobile data services and the internet market. Vittorio Colao, Mr Sarin's deputy, is regarded by many as a more than able successor, with analysts expressing a high regard for him last week.
One of the likely headaches for Mr Colao is the prospect of European regulators cracking down on the cost of using mobile phones abroad. The company itself admits that call prices in Europe could fall by up to 15% during the next two years, potentially wiping out gains made through increased call volumes.
While many analysts were hinting at future earnings upgrades last week, the shares fell back initially on fears that the economic slowdown could discourage people in emerging markets from buying their first mobile phone and raise a barrier to the company's phenomenal rates of growth away from western Europe.
While the market may have its reservations, the analyst community believes such concerns may be overdone. Almost all investment houses currently hold price targets for the stock of above 200p, meaning shares are a buy at 162.25p.
Dawson Holdings, which distributes newspapers and magazines, recently said pre-tax profits rose 18% after an efficiency drive gave a significant boost to margins. The company's other fledgling divisions - books, marketing services and Media Direct, which provides in-flight entertainment - also performed well.
In the past, Dawson has been a stock for investors looking for dividend growth, however there are now signs that expansion of the smaller divisions, coupled with greater cost savings, could turn the stock into a growth story too. Dawson sits between its two main rivals - John Menzies and Smiths News - in terms of valuation, but a greater yield makes it the more attractive pick. Buy at 92p.
