Eurotunnel in £217m bid to light up the UK
Eurotunnel is to lay 46 miles of electricity cable through the subterranean passage to France in a £217m project aimed at keeping Britain's lights on.
The initiative, dubbed Elec Link, will see Eurotunnel partner up with investment fund Star Capital to build the cable, before auctioning off the right to supply power through it.
Running through a service tunnel, the cable will be able to make up for shortfalls in volatile sources of renewable energy such as wind and solar power.
Britain and France are already linked via a 2000 megawatt power cable which opened in 1986, while National Grid switched on a 1000 megawatt 'interconnector' to the Netherlands last month.
Elec Link is 49% owned by Eurotunnel and 51% by Star Capital Partners.
A spokesman for energy regulator Ofgem said the project, due to be completed by 2015, 'benefits consumers by increasing security of supply'.
