Cost to fill average petrol tank tops £100

(Sharecast News) - The average cost of filling a family car with petrol has hit £100 for the first time in history, with the RAC declaring it "a truly dark day" for British motorists.
The cost of filling a 55-litre tank with petrol reached £100.27 on Thursday, while for diesel it topped out at £103.43 as soaring fuel prices driven by the war in Ukraine and resulting efforts to cut Europe's dependence on Russian oil continues to hammer consumers.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: "While fuel prices have been setting new records on a daily basis, households up and down the country may never have expected to see the cost of filling an average-sized family car reach three figures."

Williams also implored Downing Street to offer further financial support to motorists, including a cut in VAT on fuel.

"March's 5.0p fuel duty cut now looks paltry as wholesale petrol costs have already increased by five times that amount since March," he said.

Just 24 hours earlier the AA accused the RAC of actually being part of the problem with "speculation" that prices could climb as high as £2 a litre soon but Williams rejected the AA's criticism, stating his forecasts made no impact as to "what retailers do".

The AA called on the government to cut fuel duty by 10.0p per litre immediately and introduce a "fuel price stabiliser" to cut fuel duty when petrol prices go up and increase when they drop but Westminster has so far ruled out cutting VAT.

The UK government announced a 5.0p a litre cut to fuel duty in March as part of an effort to help reduce costs for motorists, although concerns have been raised that not all retailers have passed the cut on to consumers.

The Competition and Markets Authority has said that if it finds sufficient evidence that the 5.0p fuel duty cut had not been passed on to Britons that it would then launch an investigation that may very well lead to fines for offending retailers.
