(Sharecast News) - Japanese auto giants Honda and Nissan officially abandoned merger talks on Thursday after failing to agree on the future structure of the new company, but said they would collaborate on electric vehicles.
The duo will collaborate under a strategic partnership, according to a joint statement. A merger would have created the world's fourth-biggest carmaker by vehicle sales after Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai.
Nissan, Japan's third-biggest automaker, backed out of the talks as tensions increased over a proposal that Nissan become a subsidiary of its larger rival.
"Going forward, Nissan and Honda will collaborate within the framework of a strategic partnership aimed at the era of intelligence and electrified vehicles, striving to create new value and maximize the corporate value of both companies," they added.
