(Sharecast News) - Tracsis announced on Wednesday that ScotRail is expanding the availability of its Tap&Pay smart ticketing app following the successful completion of a six-month pilot.
The AIM-traded company said the pay-as-you-go app, which it developed, allows customers to travel without purchasing tickets in advance by automatically calculating and charging the best available fare.
It said the app, now available for download, would initially cover the Strathclyde area and routes between Strathclyde and Edinburgh.
If successful, it said ScotRail intended to roll it out more widely across its network.
The Tap&Pay system operates through Tracsis' 'Hopsta' platform, which uses location mapping to determine journey details, generates single-use barcodes for ticket validation, and ensures passengers never pay more than the cost of a weekly season ticket when making multiple trips on the same route.
Tracsis said its pay-as-you-go ticketing technology had been deployed with multiple train operators across the UK, with more than 30 million customer journeys processed to date through smartcard and contactless bankcard transactions.
The Hopsta platform was developed through Tracsis' research and development investment, and enabled customers to access best-value fares directly.
Tracsis said it earns a commission on each ticket sold via the Tap&Pay app, though it did not expect the move to make a material contribution to revenue in the current financial year as the technology moved through its early adoption phase.
"We are delighted to be working in partnership with ScotRail to expand the availability of its pay-as-you-go ticketing app which will deliver greater consumer choice and a best price guarantee without the need to pre-purchase a ticket," said chief executive officer Chris Barnes.
"Tracsis has a long track record of working with the rail industry to deliver innovative technology solutions and this is reflected in the recent nomination of the Tap&Pay app for 'Ticketing Technology of the Year' at Transport Ticketing Global 2025."
At 1016 GMT, shares in Tracsis were down 2.78% at 367.5p.
