US open: Stocks mostly lower following last week's heavy sell-off

(Sharecast News) - Major indices were mostly lower early on Monday following last week's heavy losses.
As of 1540 GMT, the Dow Jones futures Industrial Average was up 0.06% at 43,454.75, while the S&P 500 lost 0.36% to 5,991.74 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.98% weaker at 19,332.09.
The Dow opened just 26.73 points higher on Monday, doing little to reverse losses recorded in the previous session as investors again grew concerned about the state of the US economy.
In focus early on Monday was news that Apple has committed to spending $500.0bn in the US over the next four years as it outlined plans to hire 20,000 new workers and expand development into AI. The tech behemoth said in a statement that it is planning to "invest more than $500.0bn" to support a wide range of initiatives that focus on AI, silicon engineering and skills development across the country.
On the macro front, the Chicago Federal Reserve's national activity index fell to -0.03 in January, down from an upwardly revised reading of +0.18 in December. The three-month moving average, however, increased to +0.03 in January from -0.13 in December.
Still to come, Donald Trump will deliver a speech at 1900 GMT.
In the corporate space, Home Depot, Lowe's and Nvidia will all report earnings before the end of the week.
