US open: Stocks mixed amid ongoing economic concerns

(Sharecast News) - Major indices were mixed at the open on Tuesday as economic growth fears continued to weigh on stocks.


As of 1520 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.21% at 43,553.38, while the S&P 500 lost 0.39% to 5,959.82 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 1.00% weaker at 19,094.79.

The Dow opened 92.17 points higher on Tuesday, extending modest gains recorded in the previous session despite fears around the state of the US economy.

Home Depot earnings were in focus early on Tuesday after the DIY retailer's earnings narrowly beat Wall Street estimates thanks to a 2.8% uptick in comparable sales despite elevated interest rates and housing prices weighing on consumer demand.

In other news, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note dropped to 4.331% amid continued concerns about the economy, its lowest level since December.

On the macro front, S&P/Case-Shiller's house price index revealed that US home prices had increased 3.9% year-on-year in December, a slight increase from the previous month's 3.7% growth. The 10-City Composite saw an annual increase of 5.1%, up from 5% in the previous month, while the 20-City Composite posted a year-on-year increase of 4.5%, up from 4.3% in November.

Elsewhere, consumer confidence slipped in February, according to the Conference Board's monthly index, which slipped almost 7% to 98.3, missing analysts expectations for a print of 102.3.

On another note, the Richmond Fed's manufacturing index rose to +6 in February, up from January's reading of -4 and firmly ahead of market expectations of -3. The reading marked the first expansion following fifteen straight monthly declines.

Still to come, the Dallas Fed's manufacturing business index was slated for release at 1530 GMT.
