Week ahead: Geopolitics, US non-farm payrolls in focus

(Sharecast News) - Investors' focus over the coming week will be squarely on geopolitics, above all regarding diplomatic efforts aimed at clinching a ceasefire and eventual peace agreement in Ukraine.
As if that were not enough, come Tuesday the spotlight will be on the expected start of higher US tariffs on imports of Canadian, Chinese and Mexican products.
Some recent reports indicate that some are still holding out hope for a last-minute deferral or reduction in the size of the levies.
Next on investors' list of worries is the US February non-farm payrolls report that is due to be published on Friday.
Consensus is for a slight additional slowdown in hiring from the 143,000 person clip observed in January to 133,000 for February.
Worth noting are recent concerns regarding the possible impact of ongoing departmental cuts in Washington on government staffing levels and for contractors.
Nonetheless, there are differences among economists regarding the risks for economic growth and when exactly the slower pace of hiring will be apparent.
The week's other main risk event will be the European Central Bank policy meeting on Thursday, which is expected to result in another 25 basis point reduction in official short-term interest rates.
